As I consider one of my comrade’s concerns about the ways that SOTL is simply common sense (and that folks are getting rewarded for doing what we’ve been doing in comp and second languages for forever), I think about the ways that I tend to glorify what lit scholars do. While on the one hand we can think of folks as becoming too interested in the minutaie (did you know that Joyce sometimes wrote with only two fingers), the fact that the competition makes them think more carefully (and articulate arguments more compellingly).
