So, the presentation is shaping up like this:
- Brief rundown of how I got interested in this, as I move from GoT to Gibson and back, with the view becoming increasingly complicated as I complete the switchbacks.
- I think I’m out, just worried about fiction, when the damned fellas at Microsoft Studios decide to make the tagline for Halo 4 an ancient evil awakes, and populate the storyline with some kind of cybernetic bug creatures.
- Okay, so now I can’t ignore the evidence that calls me to video games, with all the standard tropes, and I have to start to think seriously about the ways in which the Ancient becomes the Other, and all the iterations and complications of that idea.
- From that comes the idea for a schematic, one in which I can identify the version of the Ancient (and the Other) that I’m thinking of and then associate that with a game or other text. Another, perhaps less dramatic, word for schematic would be, uh, table…
I’m not really making an argument, so much, as I’m simply identifying possibilities. I’m not even sure if at the end I can say that the Ancient is somehow important as the Other.
